ADMIRALTY, 22nd August 1908.

Sir,

With reference to paragraph 2 of your letter of the 20th November last, No.20238/07, respecting the expense of the upkeep of the Naval Graves in the Public Cemetery (Happy Valley) at Hong Kong, I am commanded by my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to acquaint you, for the information of the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, that a representation having been made to the Colony, as suggested, that the Graves, when placed in repair, should be maintained by them in good condition, an intimation has now been received from the Colonial Office that it is considered that this charge is not one which should properly be borne by the Colonial Government.
